PhonoFemme Vienna
PhonoFemme as an international platform for women in sound art and experimental music and takes the opportunity to counter the low representation of women in the music scene. In order not to deprive the public of female knowledge and creativity, PhonoFemme encourages female sound artists, gives the opportunity for networking and creative exchange and serves as a forum to present new projects.
Sound art is interdisciplinary in nature, or takes on hybrid forms. It often engages with the subjects of acoustics, psychoacoustics, electronics, noise music, audio media and technology, found or environmental sound, explorations of the human body etc., an ever-expanding set of subjects that are part of the current discourse of contemporary art.
In view of this range of different artistic approaches, PhonoFemme is conceptualized as a podium for innovative interdisciplinary projects of Austrian and international female sound artists. PhonoFemme is not a festival in the traditional sense, but rather an experimental ground and laboratory for the development of sound art and experimental music.
Local and international platforms are actively involved in the development process, contributing in various ways to the realization of the project according to their respective opportunities and resources. In addition to the communicative, cultural and creative exchange between Austrian and international sound artists and their subsequent presentations, a dialogue between scientists and experts specialized in art and culture are facilitated, in which sustainable and gender-sensitive structures in the field of arts and culture is discussed.
Thus, among the essential objectives of the project are to establish an international network for cultural and creative exchange, to increase the public presence of female sound artists and to enable discussions about gender stereotypes and female opportunities in art and cultural life with theorists, artists and scientists.
